Short Update: Ecuador sees continued spread of COVID-19 in prisons

FT Admin - June 4, 2020 - COVID-19 Updates, prison conditions, Prison monitoring

Nineteen more prisoners and two prison guards have tested positive for COVID-19 across two different prisons in Ecuador. This comes a week after Ecuadorian authorities admitted that 420 incarcerated people had tested positive in Ambato Prison, accounting for two-thirds of the prison’s 666 inmates. There had been riots at Ambato in April due to inmate fears regarding positive COVID-19 cases in the prison, but the government insisted that there were zero cases there.

Ecuador has been hit hard by COVID-19, and the government is moving to implement rapid testing in prisons across the country to prevent further spread.

See El Universo’s article on recent spread here and on the Ambato outbreak here (both in Spanish).
