Short Update: Skype, additional phone calls and no infected detainees in Hungarian prisons

FT Admin - April 23, 2020 - COVID-19 Updates, prison conditions

Visitations have been suspended in prisons in Hungary. Instead, detainees are allowed to Skype with their relatives for 15 minutes per week. Between 20 and 26 April 3,145 Skype calls were made, while there are around 16,500 inmates. Additional phone calls are offered (15 minutes/week), but detainees have to pay for the extra time. (The tariff of phone calls in prisons is excessive compared to the average tariff outside.)

According to the data provided by the Hungarian Prison Service, as of 23 April, 47 detainees and 63 penitentiary staff members were tested, there was no infected detainee, and there was only one infected penitentiary staff member. 47 detainees were isolated.
