Short Update: Survey in Ireland shows impact of COVID-19 on Garda station access to a lawyer

FT Admin - May 22, 2020 - COVID-19 Updates, Access to a lawyer

A new survey undertaken by Shalom Binch Solicitors in Ireland has highlighted how COVID-19 has affected suspects access to legal assistance at Garda (police) stations across the country. The survey highlights in particular, that due to the lack of a uniform approach to ensure social distancing at garda stations, and the lack of alternative mechanisms for remote legal assistance during questioning, solicitors are either having to attend Garda stations in circumstances where they cannot comply with social distancing rules, or suspects are effectively deprived of legal assistance during interviews.
