Short Update: UK probation inspections suspended until 2021

Article by Fair Trials

On 13th of May, Her Majesty’s Inspectorate of Probation (“HMIP”) announced that they will suspend its “usual core local probation inspections” until the beginning of 2021 but outlined two exceptions to this policy. Under the ‘Exceptional Delivery Model’ arrangements, HMIP will continue for the rest of 2020 to conduct thematic inspections to assess how probation services and youth offending services are coping with COVID-19. They will also inspect a number of small ‘Youth Offending’ teams between August and October 2020. In both instances, HMIP will be utilising remote inspection techniques including video-conferencing technology to conduct its fieldwork.
